GOLDEN WEDDING.
MAJOR AND MRS. J. B. WHYTE [from our own correspondent.] HAMILTON, Friday. A pleasant gathering took place in Hamilton last evening, when Major J. B. Whyte and Mrs. Whyte celebrated the Golden Anniversary of their wedding at a social. A large number of relatives and friends gathered to offer felicitations to Major and Mrs. Whyte. Among those present were all their sons and daughters, some of whom had travelled long distances to attend. The Mayor, Mr. J. 11. Fow, presided. Major Whyte was born in Glasgow in 1853, and from childhood has lived in New' Zealand. Mrs. Whyte was born in Staffordshire, England, 68 years ago, and came to New Zealand when she was three years of age. Major and Mrs. Whyte were married in Christchurch, and lived in Sydenham, Canterbury, and Pahiatua, before coming to the Waikato 20 years ago. After farming in the Morrinsville district for some years, Major and Mrs. Whyte retired and have been residents of Hamilton for the last 12 years. Major Whyte served in the South African war, going away with the sth Canterbury contingent. He was promoted to tho rank of captain and received the Queen's medal and five bars. In the Great War, Major Whyte again saw service. He was awarded the D.5.0., and lias now sc%-on medals iilcluding tho long service decoration. .Major and Mrs. Whyte are in good health, and remained at the golden wedding festivities until an early hour this morning. The members of the family are Mr. E. J. Whyte, of Katikati: S. W. Whyte, of Ifawera; Mr. G. H. Whyte, of To Awamulu; Mrs. /. Boyden, of l'oxton; Mrs. W. Boydcn, Dannevirke; Mrs. A. INIills; of Hamilton; and Mrs. E. M. Finlav, of Hamilton. There are 15 grandchildren.
