PLUNGE OVER CLIFF.
STOLEN CAR WRECKED.
EARLY MORNING INCIDENT.
A taxicab which was stolen from the city on Monday was discovered early yesterday morning smashed beyond repair at the foot of a 100 ft. cliff at Orakei. The vehicle was owned by Mr. J. T. Mantel], of Heme Bay. The plunge over the cliff was observed by a resident, who declared that the car was not occupied at the time. He saw it standing at the edge of the cliff, facing the precipice, with the lights burning. While he watched, another car pulled up in a nearby street. The taxi moved slowly toward the cliff and toppled over. As the witness rushed to the foot of the cliff to offer assistance in the event of anyone being inside, the other car started off and disappeared.
A tangled heap of wreckage met the resident's gaze when he arrived afc the scene. He noted that the hand brake was off and that the petrol tank was empty, although there was no leak. Inside the car was a lady's purse, containing a receipt and an address in Sydney. The wrecked vehicle was insured for £l5O in the Hartford Office.
