MISHAP TO TRAIN.
TWO WAGGONS DERAILED.
RACEHORSES IN ACCIDENT.
Two waggons attached to the train which left Auckland at 7 a.m. yesterday for Frankton were derailed at Whangamarino at 10 a.m. There were ten racehorses on the train, returning to the Waikato after competing at the Easter race meeting at Ellerslie, and two of them, consigned to Matamata, were in one of the derailed waggons. The other waggon contained boxes of vegetables. No damage was caused and the horses were not hurt. Although the two waggons left the rails neither was overturned. It is believed the accident occurred through the slipping of a spring on the engine, causing the train to sway. One waggon was forced off the rails, carrying the other with it.
The train was delayed two hours at Whangamarino while a repair gang put the waggons back on the rails. The East Coast express, which left at 9.8 a.m., was delayed an hour and the Rotorua express, which left at 10.15 a.m., was held up for half-an-hour. The permanent way was not damaged.
