The Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting provided splendid racing on each day, but there was a marked absence of visitors and speculation was restricted in spite of the favourable conditions. Convoy, the winner of the Autumn Nurnery Handicap to-day, is a brother to Red Heckle, the Great Northern Derby winner, nnrl made his fust appearance in public yesterday. He is built on similar lines to Red Heckle, but is more robust. Indications are that he will develop into a better stake earner. . ' Ball Dress should have beaten Shatter in the Yiildhurst Handicap, but was ridden an indifferent race. She covered a lot of extra ground going round the field on the tuns. A more vigorous finish on the part of Shatter's rider also was a factor. Both Black Dnke and Compris v.rrc responsible for meritorious efforts in fighting out tlie finish in the Great Autumn Handicap. IThey were at the tail of the field about five furlongs from homo and Compris was actually last into the straight. Black Duke gradually moved up rounding the home turn and had Pink Note, 'who had acted afc pacemaker practically throughout, beaten inside the distance. Compr.'s then nppoa:;id on the scene with a remarknble run and had Black Duke doing his best ut the finish. Vertigern was well back turning for' home and also put up a fine performance. In another stride he would have been Second. Historic and Mount Boa made poor showings. Limerick was going well right to the straight entrance, but then drifted bapk to last place. The sensation of the meeting was caused by the defeat of Nighlmarch in the Challenge Stakes. He was "always in a handy position and showed promise ' when he issued a challenge to Cricket Bat 100 yards from the post However. Ins usual finishing run was lacking and/ lie could make little impression on the Chokebore youngster, who won in ' brilliant fashion. Cricket Bat's success \ caused intense enthusiasm as a section of the racegoers was not satisfied with Nightinarsh'g withdrawal from the two big handicaps. Th(i only excuse for Nightmarch was :n the. frtct that he had been suffering from leg trouble and consequently was short of work. He will probably now be retired to the stud. i True Shaft was a strong favourite for the concluding event. 110 had every chance just behind ,t,he' leaders at the distance, but 'A'a3 disappointed in a run on the rails and hy the time he pulled out Autopay had the rac« won. True Shaft, however, was overhauling him at ench stride and appeared unlucky not tp be returned a winner.
