RACES AT ELLERSLIE.

SOMBRE COLOURS CHOSEN. . THE VOGUE FOR BLACK. Again the weather threatened rain and made it a difficult thing for women to know what to wear at the races yosterday. Although the skies were heavily overcast and the sun failed to break through the clouds, the day in reality was very pleasant and at times almost oppressive, so that those who wore light georgette or crepe do chine frocks under their coats were able to discard the latter and enjoy the warmth. Tweeds have come into their own again and tweed suits in all varieties of weaves and colours were to be seen in frocks, suits and overcoats. The black tailored suit was again conspicuously in favour and, worn with a small, close-fitting black hat, either of velvet or felt, looked extremely attractive. The beret in infinite variations was most popular and when carried out in the same material as the frock or the suit, or again in some contrasting colour, looked particularly effective. Some of the newest suits favoured tho flared skirt worn with a shaped and flared coat, but these are moro suitable for slight figures and even tho latest models show that tucks and pleats have not been entirely ousted. Shoes that carried out tho colour scheme of the costume were frequently to bo seen, and in many cases tho handbag was also in the same colouring. Among thoso who were present were: —The Countess of Orford, who wore a suit of leaf brown tweed with a cape over ono shoulder edged with fur and a close fitting brown hat to match; Lady Sinclair-Lockhart, black floral satin frock patterned in lime green and a beige hat massed with beige ospreys; Lady Robb (England), navy and white suit and navy hat; the Hon.
