USE BY BRITISH NAVY.

PROBABILITY DISCUSSED,

' ! (Received March 19, 7.45 p.m.) LONDON, March 19,

Tho Parliamentary Secretary to the Mines Department, «,Mr, 35. Shinwell, stated in tho House of Commons that if suitable oil could be produced from coal in sufficient quantities and at a reasonable price tho Admiralty would certainly buy it,

A recent cablegram from London slated: The prospect of relieving the present depression in tho coalfields was held out by Mr. George Hall, Civil Lord of the Admiralty, a former miner, in « speech at Pontypridd. Ho said the Admiralty's tests carried out in tho past year had proved that oil produced from coal gave the fiome results when used as a fuel as natural oil gave. The Admiralty had been offered a bulk supply at a price not far above the world pritfo of oil. Instead of tho nation spending £42,000,000 on Ihe importation of oil it could divert a large proportion of tho money to lite purchase of oil produced from the British coalfields.
