BRITISH CRUISERS.
WASHINGTON TREATY TYPE.
NO MORE TO BE BUILT.
" LONDON, March 18
The Daily Telegraph says it understands' that, irrespective of treaty obligations, no more Washington Treaty type cruisers liko thl> Australia and Canberra are to be constructed for the British Navy. They constitute a hybrid type, born of political expediency and have been tried, found wanting and condemned by the highest naval opinion. The paper says these cruisers reproduce on an exaggerated scale all the defects of Britain's early battle cruisers, three of which were blown -up at the Battle of Jutland under fire from more lightly armed ships.
There is no question of scrapping the present 10,000-ton cruisers, but the type is dead, says the paper. This is an encouraging sign that the Admiralty at last has broken away from the artificial standards established by the Washington Treaty and now is seeking to build ships adapted to the needs of the Empire.
