In reply to a question by Mr. J. A. Nash (Reform —Palmerston) in the House of Representatives to-day, the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, Minister of Internal Affairs, said it was not possible to state specifically the actual cost of - production ot bread, for tho reason that costs varied considerably as between different bakers in the same district. >

The production of a special shape of loaf apd "fancy" bread had a material influence on the costs per unit of production. Distribution costs, which might in a sense be regarded as part of the cost oi production, also varied considerably. Tho bakehouse production cogt in the main centres of the. nominal 41b. loaf varied from approximately 7£d to B£d. The distribution cost of the same loaf varied from approximately to 2d. General expenses had to be added to these figures, and they varied from approximately £d to IJd a loaf.
