BUSINESS MEN'S SCHEME. A

BROADCASTING OPTIMISM. With the objective of creating a more cheerful and optimistic attitude in Auckland, the City Central Progress League and the Auckland theatre proprietors have formed a joint committee'with a view to organising a "cheer-up week." In conveying this idea to the City Council last evening the committee stated that strong support was being given by other bodies, and asked for civic recognition of the movement which would absorb a number of unemployed for the. week. The theatres had undertaken to provide employment for a number of extra men in casual work, while a number of others would be absorbed in casual work by shopkeepers. The aid of the council was required for the decoration and illumination of Queen Street, the co£t of which it was asked to bear. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, said that a number of prominent business men were interested in the scheme and they had waited upon him that day. At his suggestion the matter was referred to the Finance Committee for its report.
