W.C.T.U.
The opening meeting for the year of the Auckland Women's Christian Temperance Union was held last week, Mrs. John Cook presiding. Sympathy was expressed for the fellow-members who had suffered bereavement in the Napier earthquake, the meeting standing in silence. A donation was passed to help those in distress Miss Paul, who has been the evangelistic superintendent of the union for somo years, left Auckland by the Ulimaroa for a tour of Palestine and England. Tribute was paid to the excellent service sjie had rendered the union. Francis Willard Day was observed. Extracts from the story of her outstanding life were read. The high esteem in which she was held by the people of the United States is illustrated by the fact that the one erected in her honour is the only statue of a woman in the Capitol at Washington. The remits and notices of motion to come before the convention at Nelson were discussed. Mesdames Cook and Heard were appointed delegates. Mrs. John Cook also was appointed a delegate to the National Council of Women. Afternoon tea was dispensed.
KUMEU. The Kumcu branch of tlio W.C.T.U. met in tlio Kuineu Hall on Thursday afternoon. Tho president, Mrs. R. Gates, presided. Much correspondence was dealt with and arrangements were made for a bring-and-buy afternoon, to lie held next month, in aid of the Francis Willard llonio for Orphans. A report from the cradlo roll superintendent, Mrs. Addison, was read, showing an increase of members, and that much good work had been accomplished. A paper was road by tho president urging members to make this, tho poll year, a strenuous one, so that it may be the victory year. At the close of the meeting afternoon tea was served. V
