NOTABLE SCULPTURE.
FRENCH CRITIC IMPRESSED.
AUCKLAND ARTIST'S WORK.
The work of Mr. Richard 0. Gross, the Auckland sculptor, for tho Wellington Citizens' Memorial has attracted most favourable comment from a French critic in La Revue Modorne, a journal devoted to art criticism. " One of the most beautiful monuments of New Zealand," says the Revue, " is certainly the memorial at Wellington, ' Tho Will to Peace,' by the" English sculptor, Richard 0. Gross, which was shown at the Royal Academy. It is both a beautiful piece of sculpture and a noble testimony of national sentiment, strong and full of life. Most certainly the town of Wellington has found an artist remarkably capable of realising this idea.
"The spirit .and style of Richard 0. Gross is eminently classic. He is a spiritual son of the great piaster of sculpturo of the Milan Renaissance, and he strives to raise himself to tho level of these great examples. Inspired by them he forms a personal stylo adapted to modern conditions. Capable of realising his own aesthetic conception, strong iji technique, and of a rich culture, Richard 0. Gross is an artist with a future of which the pasl; ia a guarantee."
