SHANGHAI VOLUNTEERS.
NEW ZEALAND COMMANDER. STRANGE COMPOSITE FORCE. (Received March 11, 1.5 a.m.) SHANGHAI. March 10. Lieutenant-Colonel N. W. B. Thorns, formerly of the New Zealand Staff Corps, arrived to-day to tako over command of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps, in succession to Brigadier Orpen Palmer, retired. The new commandant controls the most extraordinary volunteer force in the world. It consists of .British, Russian, American and Chinese companies, and is supported by the Municipal Council to the extent of £40,000 a year. This is the first occasion on which the command has been given to an officer from any of the Dominions.
