LATEST CRICKET BOOK.
AUSTRALIANS IN ENGLAND. The last four of England by the Australian cricketers has been treated in several different styles bv various authors, but the most recent publication, " With the 1950 -Australians," by Geoffrey Tebbutt, Australian Press Association correspondent, who travelled with the team throughout the tour, reveals the subject in a new and intimate light. Overlooking statistics and averages, and, when utilising scores or bowling figures, merely quoting them as a foundation to his arguments, the author endeavours to make his story appeal to all readers. Travelling with the players as be did and sharing their confidences, ho was able to overcome tho barriers of reserve which exist between most writers and the subject of their comment, and gives a faithful and intimate study of the Australians' characteristics, habits and thoughts. Ho sees England and Englishmen through the players' eyes, and where the latter hesitate to criticise, he does so in a fair and constructive manner.
The team's doings are traced from the time when critics had almost succeeded in instilling a slight inferiority complex with regard to its test match status, to the time when, a proven combination, it gave the lie to unfair strictures. The social life of the team is also touched upon, the author revealing firstclass side-lights which only a man in his position would have a chance of gleaning. The latter part of the book contains a chapter on each player in which a summary of each one's performances is given. Bradman's position with regard to the rest of tho team is also dealt with; The book is published by Hodder and Stoughton, Limited, London.
