STOCKS AND SHARES.

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE. MARKET HOLDS FIRM. All the better-class financial and industrial shares continue to meet with a steady demand on the Auckland Stock Exchange. A healthy volume of business spread over a wide range ivas recorded yesterday. There was a sliglitly better demand for gilt-edge stocks, but no sales took place.

Buyers predominated in the banking group right through the day. Commercials strengthened with offers up to 15s 6d, compared with 15s 2d the previous day. A sale of Nationals of New Zealand was reported from the previous day at a gain of 4s 6d on the market at the time of tho previous Auckland sale a fortnight ago. Nationals of Australasia, 'contributing, changed hands at the previous clay's Southern price. New Zealands moved up lJ>d on Monday's market to sell at 48s 9d. Two sales were put through in the insurance group. New Zealands saw their first sale since February 20 at a gain of 2s on tho market at that time. South British wero dealt in at the previous day's slightly easier price of 52s 3d. Buyers of Goldshrougli-Morts moved up Is 3d on Monday's closing market without drawing sellers below 235. Westport Coals were dealt in at the current price. Auckland Gas moved up 5d on the last sale five days before to change hands at 23s 3d after the last call. Monday's slight weakness in the market for New Zealand Breweries was not recovered, and a sale was recorded at 375, compared with 38s and 37s 4d the previous day. Tho miscellaneous group was again quiet. .Robinson's Ico Cream wero slightly firmer. A salo of Grey and Menzics preference shares was reported from the previous afternoon at 3d under par, making tho first salo of this scrip for many months. Mining was quietly active on current levels.
