BAIT FOR FAMOUS ACTOR.

"LORD ROSEBERY IN STALLS."

NEW NAME EVERY EVENING. [from our own correspondent. ] LONDON", Feb. 7. At the Repertory Players' dinner, Sir Gerald du Maurier related how he once encouraged John Hare, the famous actor, to play his best by telling him that various distinguished peers were among the audience. He. was playing with Hare in a piece called "An Old Jew," and one night, wishing to return a favour and anticipating the results of his move, he whispered to Hare as they walked upstage together that Lord Rosebery was in the stalls.

"Is he, my boy?" said Hare, who gave the finest performance of his life. "The play ran for 180 nights," said Sir Gerald, "and I ran through the peerage, putting Hare on his mettle with some new distinguished name every evening."
