KILLED IN LIFT WELL.
FATALITY AT HOSPITAL.
SAFETY DEVICE BROKEN.

At the inquest concerning the death of Mrs. Ivy Esther Smith, who was killed in a lift at St. George's Hospital, a demonstration was given by an engineer showing how the lift was defective. The safety device had been broken, he said, and the lift would move even when the door was opened. Tho inquest was adjourned for an inspector's report to be obtained,
When tho fatal accident occurred Mrs. Smith was being brought down in a bed from the top of the hospital. As tho bod was being wheeled from the lift by two sisters the cage suddenly started to move upward. The bed was half in and half out of the lift, and as the cage rose the bed and the patient dropped down the liftwell. The helpless woman was sevorely injured and died two hours later.
