For obtaining sums of money totalling over £l5O by means of false pretences. Morgan Draper, who appeared in the New Plymouth Polite Court to-day, was convicted and sentenced to reformative detention for two years.
Detective Meiklejohn said Draper stole a book of cheque forms from his employer in Now Plymouth on November 1. He then commenced a lour of (he North Island and passed valueless cheques for sums ranging from £3 to £lO. Whil. l at Taiimaninm he obtained sums of £lO, £2O and £SO. on tho representation that he had a remittance of £2OO coining from England. Ho had issued in all 21 cheques, and was arrested in Wanganui on December 8.
Accused had defrauded .tradespeople and hotelkeepers n all parts of (ho North Island. In one case lie had gono to a Presbyterian minister and said he was an attendant at Ihe. Terrace Church. Wellington. On the strength of this Ins cheque and been backed.
