BATHS AT PARNELL.

CLEAN SWIMMING WATER.

ANSWER TO CRITICISM. Resentment at tho statement in un article published in the Herai.d on Wednesday, to tho effect that "tho Parnoll Baths are not wholly frco from suspicion us a cause of infection," was expressed yesterday by tho Town Clerk, Mr. J. R. Brighani, who said the City Council had gouo to considerable expense in providing plant for tho cleansing of tho water.

This statement, together with a further declaration by a medical practitioner that these baths were "worth hundreds of guineas" to his profession, were said by Mr. Brigham to be totally uncalled for and likely to unfairly damage tho reputation of tho baths, lfe said the water in the baths Was changed twice weekly and frequent tests for purity showed that

the water, from a bacteriological point of view, was as pure as drinking water. It wbs supposed by some that tlio water for (ho Parnell Baths was drawn from tho chnnel between tho waterfront roadway and tho baths, said Mr. Brigham, but the council had gone to great trouble and expense in carrying tho intake pipe out into deep water where tho cleanest possible sea water was pumped in from the tidal channel. Bet'oro catering (lie swimming pool the water was chlorinated and aerated. To further improve Hie conditions in (he bath tho council had spent £I2OO in concreting the floor of the pool and when the water was changed twice a week the walls'and floor were scrubbed and the pool flushed out before the now supply was allowed to run in. It would be. hard to find a swimming bath in New Zealand that gave patrons such satisfactory and pleasant conditions, added Mry Brighum.
