SWEEPSTAKE SCHEME.

Sir, —I have read with great interest the notice of the sweepstake scheme in your isjue of December 20. From time immemorial it has been every human being's (even if unacknowledged) that some day they might, come into a fortune or a fairy point the way to a crock of gold. What are many investments but a hope that stocks will rise and bring the lucky investors prosperity ? Even in the very back blocks we are pestered with share-pusners "offering each of them "the chance of a lifetime"—take a bond and you will be assured of an'incomo for your old age—shares that will pay undreamt, of i nicest. They are so anxious to give the poor back-blockers money—in the future—in return for a small deposit paid at once that they expend tyres, oil and petrol, and explore real bad roads in their efforts to help investors to a fortune. According.to their receipt books they do well. So it is evident that even in these hard times people have money to invest. Surely a safe investment. run under Government supervision would appeal to the majority of people. How many men would cut out a tin of tobacco a week, a nackeis of cigarettes, or the extra glass "at the hotel to fit into the month's budget t.he price of a sweep ticket ? Surely instead of sending money up in smoke or down your throat it would be worth investing, in a draw which is £oing to bring somebody a nice fat wad. If vou don't get it just yet somebody else will, and one day you may just as likely draw other folks' ticket .money. We would bo investing money in our own country, helping unemployment and at the same time having a sporting chance of getting a nice little nest e,;g. Enthusiastic Suitortek.
