A FAST-RUN DERBY.

TIME EQUALS RACE RECORD. KARAPOTI STAYS ON WELL. IN THE LEAD THROUGHOUT. CYLINDER'S GAME CHALLENGE. Until hp una produced in the Great Northern Derby yesterday Knrnpoti had not raced beyond a mile, but his form tip to that distanco had been so good that, it was confidently expected ho would make the way extremely difficult for the New Zealand Derby winner, Cylinder, who had a very slight call in the betting. Karapoti acted right up to the expectations of his admirers by leading from end to end, to equal Desert Gold's race record time of 2m 33 3-ss. A good start saw Karapoti go to the front immediately ond lead past tho stands from Simba, Gustavo, Chrysology, Appledore and Cylinder, with Sargon last. Going out of tho straight Karapoti's rider, A. Tinker, attempted to slow tho field down, but Chrysology immediately went up on the oulsido and Cylinder moved into third place, when tho speed quickened again. Four furlongs from homo Karapoti was out two lengths from Cylinder, with Chrysology. Gustavo and Simba handy and Sargon moving up. Running to tho turn Cylinder closed up on the leader, and once into the straight ho issued a challenge on the outside. However, Karapoti was etill doing it well, and he drew away again in the last furlong, to beat Cylinder by two and a-half lengths. Gustavo was three lengths back third and Sargon was fourth. Next to finish were Appledore, Chrysology, Rosshire and Simba. A First-class Three-year-old. Cylinder mado a game response when Gray drew tho whip in the last furlong, but he was up against a tough proposition and could not muster up enough dash to cause the winner serious trouble.
