NEW TRADE TREATY.

CANADA AND AUSTRALIA.

COMPLETION EXPECTED.

OTTAWA. Dec. 29. Having been forced to stay here longer than he had planned through new developments in connection with the Canadian trade treaty with Australia, Mr. P. J. Moloney, Australian Minister of Markets, has cancelled his engagements throughout the Dominion and has gone to Vancouver to catch a steamer on Wednesday. Expressing confidence that the details of the trade agreement would be worked out during the next few days, Mr. Moloney stated that, rumours of difficulty having arisen in the negotiations were without foundation. No particular significance should be attached, he said, to the return to Ottawa from Vancouver of Mr. H. H. Stevens, Canadian Minister of Trade, as the negotiations concerned merely meant that it was more convenient to continue the discussions here. The original plans, Mr. Moloney said, were that the final details should be dealt with in Vancouver.

Mr. Stevens will arrive at Ottawa on Tuesday. The question of the importation of Australian butter is understood to have caused some difficulty. In an interview a few weeks ago Mr. Moloney expressed tho hope that the matter could be arranged so that an advisory board would bo set up here, upon whose {idvice tho Australian Government would regulate the movement.

On the other hand, several members of the Dominion Government are believed to hold that there should be no difference in the import duty as between Australia and New Zealand.

Mr. Moloney declined to discuss tho situation, but reiterated the statement that the treaty arrangements would probably be completed within a few days.
