DISPENSING WITH SHAKOS.

The helmets worn by the police prior to the introduction of the shako are 111 future to bo worn permanently by members of the force. For some days it has ! een apparent that a change was pending, for the constables on duty in Wellington have all worn helmets.

Within a day or so the Commissioner of Police, Mr. W. G. Wohlmann, hopes to issuo an instruction in connection with the change, which will bo a more or less gradual process.

The helmets will first displace the shakos in the cities, and by degrees the change will be extended to the country districts.
