TRAMWAYS ECONOMY.

CHRISTCHURCH PROPOSALS.

PROTEST BY EMPLOYEES

[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday.

Retrenchments in the Christchurch tramway service are' expected to take place, immediately after the holidays. A special meeting of the Tramway Union was held last evening to. discuss the although no statement was made officially, it was learned that the union had decided to send an "ultimatum" to the board.

Officials of the union are reticent, but it is understood that the board proposes to dispense with the services of 14 men almost immediately, and another 14 in the course of a few days.

WELLINGTON SUGGESTIONS

NO AGREEMENT REACHED.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] "WELLINGTON, Tuesday.

So far the Wellington tramwaymen and the City Council have reached no agreement in respect - to the proposals of the management for a reduction of overtime. The union has made a counter-sugges-tion of a day off a-fortnight. It is said that this would mean a greater wage loss than a loss to the tramways department, but upon "the matter of principle the men favour it.

The general manager, Mr". M. Cable, stated to-day in commenting on the result of the-'meeting in Christchurch, that anything in the nature of an ultimatum would be unwise at present, and that that was recognised by the Wellington tramway employees. There had been no spirit of antagonism during the discussions, and he believed a satisfactory solution would be found.
