VALUELESS CHEQUES.

ACCUSED PLEADS GUILTY.

[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] OPOTIKI, Tuesday.

A plea of guilty was entered by Sargent John Nash, aged 43, who appeared in the Opotiki Police Court to-day before justices on charges of issuing valueless cheques and forgery. It was stated that accused had been working for three months for a local settler, W. McDonnell, and was in town on Saturday. He went to a hotel and asked the landlady for a cheque form, which he filled in for £5 in the name of Carroll. He received £5 in cash for the cheque. The cheque was subsequently returned from the bank marked "no account." Accused also visited a fruit shop and tendered a cheque for £4 15s, purported to be signed by W. McDonnell. Ho obtained an advance of £2 on it. The signature on the cheque was proved to be forged.

Accused was committed to the Supreme Court at Auckland for sentence.
