Stedman's defeat of the holder of (be men's singles title, C. Angas, 17—15, 6—4, 6—2. The Auckland player produced a forehand drive that at times almost swept Angas oft" the court. The ball simply flew to tho coiners with bullctliko force. The first set was a marathon of 32 games, with Angas often leading and fighting grimly for the odd game, but- he was overwhelmed. The set lasted 70 minutes. Angas could not do anything biit defend in the second and third sets. Stedman's sustained brilliance and deadly accuracy surprised even his friends. He is one of the hardest hitters in New Zealand.

Another surprise was Hie defeat in the men's singles semi-final of Noel Wilson by the Canterbury youth H. A. Barnett. Wilson did not strike a good length and bis famous smash often failed him. Barnett was as cool as a veteran. The men's doubles final is between Seay and Angas and France and: France. It promises to be a hard struggle. Ihe Wellington pair, especially D. France, reached a high standard this afternoon U> defeat Wilson and Stedman in tho semi-final.
