LARGE VOLUME OF TRADE. RETURNS FOR THE YEAR. TOTAL VALUE OF £28,000,000. Merchandise of a total value of £28,340,610 passed through the Port of Auckland during the financial year ended September 30, 1930, according to returns presented to a meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board yesterday. Of this total imports were valued at £14,649,126 and exports at £13,691,484. Compared with the financial year ended September 30, 1929, imports showed a decrease of £833,733, or 6.03 per cent., and exports a decrease of £1,227,687, or 8.97 per cent. The cargo handled at Auckland wharves amounted to 2,106,460 tons, made up of imports 1,544,918 tons, exports 488,485 tons, and intra-harbour, excluding vehicular traffic, 73,057 tons. Compared with the previous year these figures showed a decrease in imports of 64,356 tons, or 4 per cent., an increase in exports of 20,901 tons, or 4.47 per cent., and a decrease in intra-harbour traffic of 10,036 tons, or 12.03 per cent. A total of 57,621 tons of cargo was handled at Onehunga Wharf, 12,101 tons being inwards and 45,520 tons outward cargo. Compared with the previous year these figures show a decrease in imports of 2.59 per cent, and a decrease in exports of .8 per cent. The intra-harbour traffic amounted to 42,404 tons, a decrease of 27,956 tons, due chiefly to the lessened demand for shell, sand and cement. The total cargo handled at both harbours amounted to 2,206,485 tons.
