LAND SETTLEMENT.

URGENT NEED OF TIMES.

The need of an advanced and comprehensive system of land settlement was emphasised by Mr. G. C. Creagh in his address at the" annual meeting of the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. " It -would appear that among our politicians," he said, " there is no one capable of giving the lead required in this matter. An effective system of land settlement should enable us to a great extent to get rid of the nightmare of unemployment, but no system can be satisfactory that does not provide land on the easiest and cheapest terms for every man who is willing to work." He quoted J. A. Gibbs, the author, to the effect that it was incumbent on the really rich men of England to hold a stake in the land and said the idea might well be carried a stage further in New Zealand and rich men set aside a fair propotrion of their land for settlement on easy conditions.-
