LAUNCHING NEW SCHEME.

MEETING ON SATURDAY.

The. Unemployment Board's recentlyadopted scheme for organising relief work through district committees will be laid before those interested in Auckland by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. S. G. Smith, at a. public meeting in the Town Hall concert chamber on Saturday evening. The meeting has been convened, at the Minister's request, by the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. G. Baildon. All local and public bodies and organisations interested are invited tc> send representatives. The Minister will address the gathering, which will then consider the advisability of setting up an unemployment committee for Auckland, and. if it is thought advisable, subsidiary local committees as well. The functions of the proposed district unemployment, committees were defined by the Unemployment Board at the end of last week. "Summarised, they are:—(l) To collect information; (2) to organise individual effort by residents in finding temporary employment; (3) to co-operate with existing relief organisations; (4) administer any fund granted by the Unemployment Board for subsidising improvement work on farms upon pound for pound basjs; (5) to exercise general supervision and keep records of work offered to and performed by individuals; (6) to report to the board the names of any men refusing work or performing it negligently. The subsidiary local committees are to exercise functions delegated to them by their district committees. OTAHUHU ORGANISATION. PROPOSAL FOR COMMITTEE. A conference of representatives of the Otahuhu Borough Council, Manukau County Council, Papatoetoe Town Board and Otahuhu returned soldiers has been convened for Friday evening, when it is proposed to set up a local committee for the combined district of Otahuhu, Papatoetoe, Mangere East and East Tamaki. It is ielt, that a considerable amount of work which would be entitled to wages subsidies under scheme No. 2 of the Unemployment Board, wiil be found in the district.
