The earthquake, and later a fire which destroyed his shop, were given as causes of his failure by Malcolm McLean, a storekeeper, of Karamea, who met 23 of his creditors to-day. The total of the debts owing to unsecured creditors is £8096, and to secured creditors £1760. The value of the real estate owned by bankrupt is assessed at £4140, and of the securities £2lßl. The total deficiency was, according to bankrupt, £1346. After a long examination it- was decided to allow bankrupt to keep his furniture.
