NEED OF AIRPORT.

AUCKLAND'S POSITION. POLLEN ISLAND SITE. Auckland's need of a municipal airport was emphasised at a meeting of the Auckland Development Association, last evening. The meeting was presided over by Mr. ,J. F. W. Dickson, who said the.provision of an airport was one aspect in which it was felt that Auck land was sadly lagging, Details of tho scheme exploiting the possibilities of Pollen Island for that purpose were laid before tho meeting by Mr. David B. Russell, an Avondale engineer, who said that by the erection of a stopbank a first-class aerodrome, suitable for both land and seaplanes, could be secured. The sito was about eight miles from the city by road and six miles by water, and the construction of a short piece of road from the foot of Rosebank Road would provide it with excellent access. By means of a stopbank, four feet high, an area of 152 acres could easily be obtained, or, if de.sirable, 400 acres could he enclosed. Tho whole of the area belonged to the City Council and Mr. Russell's estimate of the cost involved was under £2O,CCQ for the whole scheme.

The meeting decided to investigate tho scheme fully and appointed a committee, comprising Messrs. .J. F. W. Dickson, S. I. Crookes, E. D'Esterre, and D. B. Russell to arrange a conference with tho engineers of the City Council and tho Auckland Harbour Board.
