ENCOURAGING JUNIORS

PROPOSAL OF COUNCIL

Proposals for an annunl junior truck and field championship meeting: to bo held by the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association were embodied in notices of motion presented nt tho annual meeting of the council of tho association last evening. The proposals aro to be considered by a subcommittee, consisting of tho president, Mr. R. W. McVilly, deputy-chairman, Mr. H. Amos, and Mr. V. Hugo, who will present a report at tho next meeting. They will bo considered too, by the conference of centres next year. A preliminary notice of motion. "That two junior championship events (ono field and one track) lie included in the programme of the championship meeting at Dunedin in February, 19yi," was introduced by Mr. Hugo and seconded by Mr. Amos. In bringing the motion forward Mr. Hugo that that, from attending the annual secondary school meetings, he had become convinced that amateur athletics lost at least 80 per cent, of talent which was available through letting it drift away after boys had left school. It was time tho association did something to encourage young athletes. Mr. Amos said that in England and elsewhere it had been proved that such junior championships were the best means of finding athletic ability. "However, we do want youngsters to think that tho winning of blues and athletic, honours aro the main things in life," said Mr. Ainos. DATES FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS. TRACK AND FIELD TITLES. At tho annual meeting of tho council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association the following were among the officers elected:—Patron, Lord Bledisloe; president. Mr. It. W. McVilly; secretary and treasurer, Mr. L. A. Tracy (Wellington). The track and field championships for the 19.'!1-;!'2 season wore allotted (o Auckland, tho cross-country _ championship for the 1930-31 season to "Auckland, and the road cycling championship for 1930-31 to Otago. Affiliation was granted the Otaki. Opunako and Taihape Clubs. Reinstatement as amateur competitors was granted to J. M. Reid (Waimatc) and G. W. Brett (l'apanui).
