MEN ON RELIEF WORK.

REPLACEMENT AT TE ANAU. COMPLAINT TO MINISTER. [nv TELEGRAFir. —PRES3 ASSOCIATION.] TNVERCARGILL, Friday. News that 40 of the men employed on the Te Anau relief works aro to be discharged on Tuesday and replaced by another 40 came as a surprise to those dealing with the unemployment question here. Recently advice was received from the Hon. P. A. do la Perrello that 40 men would lio placed on the Te Anau works, and this was interpreted as meaning that an additional 40 men would bo employed

On receipt of tho department's decision to engage a fresh batch of 40, the Mayor telegraphed to tho Minister of Public Works stating that he understood that the men at To Anau were incensed at the proposal, arid adding that tho situation here demanded thiu additional p.ovision bo made urgently for unemployment works. Messages were also sent to Mr. Pei idle and Mr. 11. E. Holland, Leader of the Labour Party.
