OBITUARY.

MR. GARRETT BARRT. The death occurred yesterday of an old resident of Auckland, Mr. Garrett Barry, of Wellpark Avenue, Grey Lynn, in his 88th year. Mr. Barry was born at Queenstown, Ireland, and at the age of 22 came to the Dominion in the ship Alliquess, which arrived at Auckland on Christmas Eve, 18(55. Soon after arrival he obtained employment as slaughterman at a small slaughterhouse at New. market, situated whero the railway station now stands. When the municipal abattoirs were opened at Western Springs. Mr. Barry joined us a slaughterman and had the honour ol: killing the first bul« lock. Mrs. Barry, who was born adP Matakana 82 years iigo, is still living* Mr. and Mrs. Barry celebrated the diamond jubilee of "their wedding otf August 19, 1928. MRS. A.. E. SHAW. The death occurred at Te Awamutu re*, cently of an old resident of Ararimu Mrs. A. E. Shaw, aged 89 years. Mrfcj Shaw was born in Barton, England, itf 1841, and went to Melbourne as a littl£ girl with her parent a, Mr. and Mrs* David Holdsworth. In 1851 they came tot New Zealand, settling at Otahuhu, whera' her father kept a general store during thef* Maori War. She married Mr. John Shaw; and went to live at Thames during th# gold rush, staying there some years. Their they bought a farm of about 200 acres 30 miles from Auckland, and on this they' made their home, cmce being burnt oult by bush fires. There were no roads or' railways in those clays and butter had to be taken to Auckland on pack horses, selW ing as low as 3d per lb. There was family of ten children, seven of whom are, still living. The death has occurred of Miss Mariotfj Jane Ludbrook, aged 67 years. Miss Lud/. brook was the daughter of the late Mr*! S. B. Ludbrook. a well-known sheepfarmepi of the Bay of Islands, her mother beintf. a daughter of the late Archdeacon Henrtfj Williams. Miss Ludbrook was educated* at Napier, then returned to the Bay of? Islands, coming to Gisborne about 20? years ago.
