ST. HELIERS BUS SERVICE.

Sir, —The arguments of "Gleridowie'* regarding the St. Heliers bus service are so far removed from fact that I beg to correct a few of his errors. If "Glendowie" had attended any of the meetings of the Ratepayers" Association he would know that Mr. FawceM appears before the Transport Board as the accredited representative for the Tamaki District. Mr. Fawcett deserves thei thanks and gratitude of the whole district for his effort* to establish a bus service with fares that are not higher than those in other parts of Auckland district. For "GlendowieV* information I may iitate that the proposals of the Ratepayers' Association would give the majority of workers cheaper fares and the minority, who work outside the city, would not have an increase on their present fares. Our cheapest method of transport is via the waterfront road to tho city. To serve the majority of people in this district the service should travel alternate tripsi up Wharf Road, along St. Heliers Main Road, turning at St. Thomas' ruined church into Kohi. marama Road. There are, I believe, only 14 houses from St John's College .(inclusive) to Purewa Cemetery, and for these 14 houses this district will be asked to foot the bill for a feeder' service.. The proprietor of the Taixiaki bus service is not by the wildest stretch of imagination entitled to the use of the waterfront road. This road belongs financially to the citizens of Auckland. The Transport Board showed a complete disregard of its moral obligations toward the people who are paying for that road when it handed th# transport on it to private enterprise to gain the profits which belong to the citizens. I have been for many year - , using the transport in this district and since the inception of Keys, Ltd., allied to th« Transport Board's authority in the matter of fares, expenses to the travelling public soar higher and higher. A most significant fact is the number of people using bicycles. On more than one occasion lately I have noticed women on bicycles, battling along through wind and rain on their homeward way. Old Tares.
