Tho allegation that ho had falsely represented himself to bo a married man with seven dependants, in order to obtain work, led to tho appearance in tho Dunedin Police Court to-day of Alexander Thorn, who was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond.

(Jhiof-Detectivo Camoron said Thorn who was a single man, lived with his aged mother. Ho registered himself at tho Labour Department as a married man with seven total dependants aiyi ono partial dependant. Tho department was acting as agent for tho Hospital Board in allotting work, and accepted Thorn's statement as correct. Ho was given several jobs. As ho was a singlo man he was not entitled to this work.

Mr. White, counsel for accused, said his client tried for months to get work and in the end becamo desperate. The magistrato said it. was a serious offence to impose on a charitable institution and get benefits tvhich would not, otherwise be received. Ah accused had been in custody until tho afternoon he did not propose to enter a conviction, but the rase would be adjourned for 12 months.
