n INTERESTS OF THE TRADE. e ALTERNATIVE PROPOSALS. a 11 CANBERRA. Nov. 13. A conference of Stale Ministers of Agrir culture arid growers, millers, merchants 5 " and other representatives of wheat interests, adopted alternative proposals '• which the Federal Government is to he c asked to consider in the following order y of preference:— (1) (from South Australia) For a sales 8 tax of 144s a ton on all (lour sold by millers for local purposes for a period of one year to December 31, 1931, the proceeds to be distributed among the wheat-growers of tho various States on a pro rata basis. (2) The Government to guarantee 3s a ' bushel at country stations. (3) Tho imposition of a sales tax on flour for local consumption, which would return 4s 9d a bushel for wheat at tere minal ports. a Mr. F. M. Forde. acting-Minister of a Markets, said the defeat of the Wheat i- Marketing Bill in tho Senate was a serir ous blow to the farmers. One result r was that the Commonwealth Bank could e not undertake to pay any guaranteed - price.
