NOTES ON THE FORM.

MR, NICOLL'S GREAT DAY. WRACKLER AND ARETHUSA. MISHAP IN DERBY CONTEST. [I3ST TELEGRAriT.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The New Zealand Derby at Addington today was robbed of a lot of interest bv n smash aftor tho iiold had travelled seven furlongs, with tho result that Flying Cloud and Royal Chenault came down. Checkers lost his driver and Location nnd Colorado were bndly interfered with. Tho accident made no difference to tho result for Arethusa over tho last part completely outclassed tho others and, picking ud Bix lengths in tho straight, sho won with ridiculous ease. It was a striking performance, and the manner in which Arethusa disposed of Rawhitiroa in tho final stages stamped her a3 ono of tho best three-year-olds ever raced in New Zealand, a worthy successor to her full-brolber, Wrackler. This marked tho fifth win in six starts for Mr. Nicoll's filly and her winning sequenco has not ended. It was a popular win, but only a very short price was returned. Rawhitiroa pacod solidly throughout and ho had every chance, but failed to make any impression on tho winner. He is useful and will win good races. Chenaway pleased bv tho manner in which ho did his work, but he was palpably short of a race. Ho will do a lot bettor in the near future. Bingen Junior went a surprisingly good race and was in the picture until half-way down tho straight. Royal Chenault and Location wero pacing well when tho accident hanponed. Tho time. 3m 25 l-ss, has been beaten on several occasions, but it is doubtful whether tho raco has been moro decisively won. Easy Win lor Wrackler. Tho raco for tho Now Zealand Cup was another triumph for Mr. H. F. Nicoll. his trainer, D. Wurren, and driver, M. Holmes, for Wrackler over tho last part mado a onehorse raco of tho final for tho cup. Tho contest was not exciting as was expected for Logan Park stood on tho mark and took no part in the raco, while Author Jinks again lost a good deal of ground. Later in the raco King Pointer broko badly and this also took a lot of interest out of the race. Wrackler won on his merits and although Author Jinks, after losing up to CO yards, went a great raco to got second money it did not appear that ho would havo had any chanco with Wrackler even with an even despatch. Wrackler was kept in a handy position throughout, allowing Jewel Pointer, Terence Dillon and Kohara to make tho pace for him. It was not until throe furlongs from homo that M. Holmes asked Wrackler for ti semblance of an effort and when ho did the gelding quickly disposed of Terence Dillon. A couple of smart cuts with tho whip set tho Wrack gelding on his mettlo but no further urging was reauirod for Wracklor came away to win in tho easiest manner possible. Author Jinks Goes Fast, Author Jinks gave a fine display of pacing once on tho journey. Terence Dillon, as usual, pulled hard throughout and ho had overy chance. When tackled at the top of tho straight.ho collapsed very badly and altogether put up a poor fight. Kohara. too. was in a good position throughout, but ho failed to show tho dash that characterised his first day's effort and his form wan disappointing. Jewel Pointer and Logan Chief found tho company too good nnd King Pointor broke up. Olive Nelson, who had disappointed her connections on tho first day by breaking badly,'werit out at a good prico in the Whitelciffh Handicap, and, taking tho lead with half tho journey gone, sho withstood nil challenges to win very easily from White Satin. Tho winner had n number of smart performances to her credit and during last season she wen six races in moderate company Her display of trotting on this occasion was a good ono and sho stayed on well. Wliitg Satin made no mistakes on tho journey, but sho was slow over the first part and lost a lot of ground. Over the last quarter-milo sho put in a great burst of speed. Fifa and Surprise Jonrney had .no chance with her. Better placed in iho early stages, While Satin might havo caused the winner to register fust time. Surpriso Journey put in a fast run at the end of six furlongs, but tho effort found hint out. Fifa wns running on well at the end, but Duke Bingen and Tranipcrisp broko bndly. Harold Logan's Brilliance. Harold Logan was favourite for tho Courtenay Handicap and after Neeoro had made the pace a cracker for tho milo and three-quarters the Logan Pointer gelding disposed of him in very short order. It was a really brilliant performance. Tho winner was in a handy position from the start and the fact that he went the journey in 4.22 4-5 spoaks for, itself. Thin marked tho tenth win scored by Harold Logan in liia last 12 starts and his next raco will bo awaited with interest. Vendome, patiently driven, finished with a raro burst of speed and worried Curmel out of second placo. Grandlight's display was in striking contrast to his running on the first day and tho only- others to show up wero Free Advico and Milriol do Oro. In tho straight Erin's Fortuno broko and fell heavily. Nelson do Oro was made a warm favourite for tho November Handicap, but after, pulling to tho front and leading for tho greater part of the journey ho failed to withstand tho challenges of Sunny Bob and Steel All. Sunny Bob was always in a handy position and his effort was reserved until tho straight was reached. Wrackeen failed over the last part. Aleron and John Noble failed to slay. Sunchild broke badly, but Arikitoa wont well enough to suggest a win in tho near future. A Good Dividend. Sir Guy and Hostess were the favourites fnr tho Metropolitau Handicap and while Sir Guy went a great raco and was only narrowly defeated Hostess failed to show up at any stage. The raco did not arouse much interest, for, toward the finish, Proud Dillon and Sir Guy drew oiit and in a desperate finish the former gained tho verdict by a narrow margin, returning a double-figure dividend. Tho winner is a useful horso in whom Freo Holmes has worked a big improvement. He gavp M. Holmes his fourth winning drive for tho meeting. Sir Guy was always nicely placed and only failed in the last bit. Erin's Lynn was in third placo, but there was not much merit in her performance. Tho Tonic-Writer bracket was a warm first choice in tho Sockburn Handicap nnd Tonic, after being driven a patient raco, mado a bold bid in tho straight and fairly outstayed Rose Audo, who had mado all tho running. It was not a very exciting contest, for a bad break by "Writer nt the atart put him out of count and with tho exception of tho winner and runner-up all ! mado ono or more mistakes. Tonic is a much improved trotter and his display was a pleasing ono. Ukulelo Lady had every chance, but did not oliow the brilliancy expected and sho broke several times in tho lust hulf-mile. At her best sho is only useful. AN INTERESTING WORK OUT. ARACHNE DEFEATS STONEY, An interesting work-out was witnessed at Epsom yesterday between Pavlova (F. J. Smith). Great Vanity (G. Webb), Araohne (O. Fairman), and Stoney (C. Smith). They began in tho order named nt tho milo and a-half post, Stoney losing ground by breaking. Howcvor, ho soon mado up tho leoway to join Pavlova .at tho end of a half in 1.25. Stoney carried on the running to tho milo in 2.38 and was still leading at the mile and a-quarter peg, when Arachne moved up. Arachno finished on well to beat Stoney home, Pavlova and Great Vanity being well back. Arachne paced the last half-mile in 1.11.
