[BY TELEGRArjT.—OWN COWtESFONBENT. ] WELLINGTON, Thursday. Tho view that tho business outlook was much brighter to-day than it was a few weeks ago was taken by Mr. Will Appleton, tho well-known \\ ellington business man, when speaking at tho Optimists' Club luncheon to-day. Mr. Appleton said that ho had just completed a tour of tho Dominion and was pleased to report that even in Dunedin tho general feeling among business people was that commodity prices had just about touched bottom. With tho advent of better weather conditions and tho realisation of portion of our produce, more ready money would shortly "bo circulating, and tho wheels of commerco would then revolvo a littlo moro quickly. All tho indications aro that from now till March or April thero will bo a slow but steady upward trend. "It is truo that in somo instances traders have been forced to tho wall, but in tho great majority of cases tho volume of trade lias been well maintained," said Mr. Appleton. " I have found that in those cases whero special effort has been made ' sales figures aro really ahead of tho same period last year. In Christchurch, in no fewer than four cases in different lines of business, it was reported that there had been a higher turnover than for the previous year. In one instance, that of a manufacturer turning out a staple product, the figures wero actually up 25 per cent. " Just to show what can be done by aggressive selling methods, I will quote .1 local case. Somo months ago the directors of a motor distributing firm decided, contrary to the policy of most other concerns, to put on extra salesmen and to increase their advertising. They did so, and added 35 per cent,, to tho selling staff. This meant an increase to the pay-roll of £25,000 per annum. Tiio result is that despite alleged hard times sales have reached.record figures."ECONOMY IN CHEQUES. NEW METHOD IN ENGLAND. SAVING WORK AND EXPENSE. A widor use of the practice of mak : ing payments through orders on a bank is envisaged by tho action recently taken by the large joint-stock banks in England. For somo years past this practice has been followed by many large firms in making salary payments, and private individuals havo shown an increasing inclination to employ it for making regular payments, such as club subscriptions. The debtor instructs his banker to make to tho creditor's banker a certain payment on certain dates until further notice, a number of such payments being covered by ono chequo drawn on the debtor's banker. Thus a considerable saving of money and labour is effected, first, in tho cheque stamps; secondly, in the cost of postage; thirdly, in the absence of a, receipt stamp; and fourthly, in the workentailed in posting individual cheques and receipts. Such payments are obviously only possible where both debtor and creditor possess banking accounts, and havo mutually agreed to this form of. remittance. It, is hardly surprising that tho search for economies has led to the idea of I lie wider development of this met hod of making payment, particularly in large industrial enterprises, the Times Trade Supplement remarks. Tho Treasury having endorsed tho legality of tho system, tho banks, or at least several of them, have taken steps to prepare for its extension. Banks, it is understood, propose charging a commission on payments made in this manner. A comparable system of making payments without the iim- of cheques has been employed in Coin, any for 'omp years and there, it, is understood, the banks have instituted a clearing sys'om for the lists of payments with which customers supply them.
