RAILWAY FREIGHTS.
OPPOSITION TO INCREASES. PROTEST BY WAIKATO FARMERS. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN COPnF.SrONDE.VT.] HAMILTON. Friday. Opposition to tho proposed abolition of free carriago of lime and tho increasing of freight rates on the railways was expressed at a meeting of the Waikato sub-provincial branch of the Farmers' Union in Hamilton to-day. Mr. J. H. Furniss presided. Mr. R. H. Feisst said tho union should protest strongly at the removal of privileges from the primary industries and their transference to other industries. Tho Railway Department, in its annual report, showed tho actual cost of concessions made to farmers without mentioning those made to other industries. The public thus gained the impression that the agricultural industries were getting.all the concessions. farmers at present could just manage to buy manure, said Mr. F. L. Onion. Soon they would be unable to purchase it, owing to the high railway freights. It was decided to circulate petitions of protest throughout all branches in the Waikato and to ask the Auckland executive to obtain signatures throughout the province.
