WAIWERA TEAM AT EPSOM. NOVICES IN FINE CONDITION. S. Tuke, irainer for Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Evans, of Waiwera, has taken his team to Royal Oak for the season and is a regular attendant at Alexandra Park. Moko Chief, who since his surprise victory at tho Auckland unemployment relief meeting has been on the easy list as the result of an accident at Hamilton on the eve of the Woikato fixture, has made a splendid recovery and is working again at headquarters with hi? customary dash. Tho half-sister (by Nelson Bingen) to Moko Chief. has furnished into a handsome three-year-old and is showing promise as a pacer. Another novice of the same age, and 0110 wto has everything to recommend him on general appearances, is a trotter by Peter Moko from a Gold Bell mare. He kngws how to trot correctly, but will not bo hurried in his preparation. Tuke is now paying closer attention to his pacing pony stallion, Sirdar, a eon of Bex Wilkes, whom ho brought from Tasmania. In his native land Sirdar won many races over all distances without putting up anything in the nature of fast times. Sirdar will have his first race m New Zealajid.at Whangarei, where the classes will suit him admirably.

TROTTING DERBY. ARETHUSA STILL FAVOURITE. A few weeks ago the only candidate seriously discussed foi the New Zealand Trotting Derby, to be decided at Addingtoji next Thursday, was tho brilliant three-year-old filly Arethusa. Tho sister to Wrackler displayed remarkable ability last season as a two-year-old, and in winning the Sapling Stakes at Ashburton crefttod a record of 3.25 3-5. Arethusa was early on tho sceno as a winner this season and when sho spreadeagled the field in the Methven Cup last month tho two classics were voted a good thing for her. However, during tho last 'few weeks, ether Derby candidates have been coming well into tho limelight with winning performances, and whilo Arethusa retains her position as tho popular selection, the event will not be nearly such a one-Bided contest ns previously anticipated-'Tho defeat of Arethusa at Oamaru on Labour Day may have deterred b few of her admirers, but tho majority will npt allow one reverse to check their enthusiasm for a high-class and well-performed three-year-old. From the siime stable comes Flying Cloud, who has succeeded in getting on the win-ning-list lately and will make a useful double string to Mr, H. F. Nicoll's bow. Checkers, after his fine showing at MetUven, was favourably considered in some quarters, and, in spite of failure in his latest essay, ho will count a fair number of admirers on tho day. Chenaway, by Ilia successful debut at Hutt Park on Saturday, haa* quickly come into calculations and somo good judges are looking to him to effect a surprise at Addington. While those mentioned are certain to add interest to the classic in view of their form, it may bo left to J. Bryce's representative, Rawhitiroa, hall-brother to Kohara, to throw down the gauntlet to Arethusa when the real business starts, Rawhitiroa is in winning vein and Mr. R. M. Morton entertains high hones of securing his third Ne.w Zealand Derby, Taurekarelta and Kohara having previously won for him. Mr. Nicoll is< likewise keen oil Arethusa gaining him his third eur/'BS. Childe Pointer and Wrackler being his previous winners.
