BURGLARY CHARGE.
TWO MEN BEFORE COURT. ALLEGED THEFT FROM SHOP. Charged with breaking and entering the shop of Preston and Son, tailors, on September 34 and stealing 25 yards of serge, valued at £25, Edward Johnston and Sydney Adams appeared in the Police Court before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., yesterday. Hector Norman Preston, manager of the shop, said a plate-glass window had been broken and a hole made largo enough to admit a man. A roll of blue serge was missing. Witness said the material in a suit produced by Chief-Detective Hammond was the same as that stolen from his shop. Harold Frederick Bash, ship's- fireman, said the two accused had stowed away on his steamer at Napier and come to Auckland. They %vent ashore that day but had slept on the ship the same night,. Witness went to a party, where there wero other firemen from the steamer, on September 33. When be returned to the ship, between one and two o'clock on the morning of September 14, he saw tho two accused, one of whom produced a roll of serge and asked him to buy a suitlength. He agreed to pay 15s for the cloth. Witness said he was under the influence of liquor when he returned to the ship after the party. Chief-Detective Hammond: Did the .accused say something about " doing a job " on the night of the party ? Witness: Something was said about a " job " but accused did not say they did it. Cross-examined, accused said he was not sure who asked him to buy the serge. The case was then adjourned until next. Thursday, both accused being remanded in custody.
