NORTH AUCKLAND LAND.
STATEMENT CRITICISED. SETTLEMENT LEAGUE'S VIEW. The statement made by the Commissioner of Crown Lands for tho North Auckland land district, Mr. O. N. Campbell, with regard to the areas of land unsuitable for settlement, was criticised in a report presented by the secretary, Mr. N. G. Gribble, at a meeting of the New Zealand Land Settlement and Development League yesterday. The report stated that, according to the commissioner's statement, out of a total area of 450.000 acres of Crown lands half was unavailable for settlement, while of tho remaining 225,000 acres 75.000 acres were apparently without prospect of settlement. This was a much larger proportion than should be the case and the league should ask the commissioner for details of the figures. Mr. Gribble said the experiments being carried out by the Department of Agriculture on the ironstone lands of Waipapa, Bay of Islands, were useless. 1 here was a number of young men in the district eager to obtain some of this despised land. The chairman, Mr. W. J. Holdsworth. said no reliance could bo placed on the published statement. It was decided to ask the commissioner for an explanation of the statement.
