STOWAWAY'S PLAINT.
CONDITIONS IN AUSTRALIA. GAOL FOR EIGHT MEN. LONDON, Nov! 3. Eight men were sentenced to three weeks' imprisonment at Eastham for stowing away on the Mamilius from Wellington. The prosecutor said ho understood that the next Shaw-Savill ship from New Zealand had 25 stowaways on board. One defendant to-day told a remarkable story of unemployment in Australia, where, he said, women and children were starving and men were picked up helpless by the roadside. The chairman of the Bench warned defendants that work- was as difficult to procure in England as in the Dominions.
