Conditions were ideal for training operations at Epsom yesterday, with the result that trainers with candidates eligible for the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting this month gave their charges fast work. The dirt track was in fine order, and the footing was conducive to good times. t Before breakfast C. G. Lee put in an appearance with A 1 John and Tiger Salve, the latter having gone back to his old trainer for his Christmas preparation. Tiger Salve was given steady work over several circuits, but is still ' a long way below his best form. A 1 John paced freely over a couple of laps, without being aßked for his best. K. Morrison was > also early astir, with Benefice and Lord Haldane. Benefice moved in good style over a mile and ahalf, while Lord Haldane, without being pressed, trotted at a sound clip over three circuits. Lord Haldane has built up a lot in condition of late and should soon be ready to give of his best. Parrißh Belle, who looks none the worse for her recent racing, worked steadily over a distance of ground. She was not asked to register any time, but went at a good even gait. Belle Axworthy, pulling hard, negotiated 12 furlongs in faultless style, and was held in check to record 1.15 for the final halfmile. Oliver Thorpe, unhoppled.. paced pleasingly for three laps, and was anxious to increase the speed. He is improving with each work-out. Explosion's Task. Explosion, working at the trotting gait, made no mistakes over two miles. Ho is in great heart and when hoppled up again will make his presence felt in approaching contests. * The Abbey (W. Clifton) and Queen Elizabeth (C. Fairman) went away together from the mile and a-hulf peg, reaching the mile post in 2.19. Two furlongs further on Queen Elizabeth was eased up, and The Abbey finished his allotment in 3.28. Ben Bingen trotted steadily for 12 furlongs, showing an even gait all the way. He appreciated the solid footing. Etta Cole was not asked to do anything like her best over a few circuits, but when allowed to run along in the final stages, registered 36s for two furlongs. Dad's Hope bowled along merrily for a mile, and when asked to step out at a brisker pace over the next half-mile showed a 2.20 gait. Dad's Hope is coming to hand quickly. Pavlova, Stoney and Logan's Pride went away, in that order from the mile and alialf post. Stoney was in front at the mile in 2.25, and rattling along over tho next half, finished his task in 3.34. Logan's Pride and Pavlova took 3.38 and 3.10 respectively. Warplane, clocked from the ten-furlongs disc, accomplished his task at a 2.20 gait, finishing up full of running. If he had been asked a question, Warplane could have done a lot better. Mountain Dell Moves Well. Mountain Doll'e assignment was two miles, and moving with fine freedom, she passed tho mile in 2.25, and reached the mile and a-half in 3.36. Without much exertion she came home the last half in 1.10. Great Fame and Dan Direct jumped away at the mile and a-half peg, and with less than a circuit covered were joined by Linnett' tho Great. The mile took 2.33, but then the speed was on, Dan Direct and Linnett the Great finishing together in a fast run half of 1.7. Great Fame, who was with them for two furlongs of the final issue, broke, and was pulled up. Woodvale,' Yude out, went with Maid of the Mountains for threa circuits, the pair keeping well together. After running a half in 1,14, both improved on this by three seconds in the next four furlongs. Arachne was given a solid task over a mile and a-half.. She was pulling hard all the way, and reeled off the final quartermile in 84s. Gold Treasure, looking a picture after his short respite, was worked unhoppled, showing a fine relish for. his medium pace effort. . WHANGAREI RACES. TRAIN ARRANGEMENTS.
