SPORT OF CYCLING.
MANUKAU AMATEUR CLUB. STRENUOUS PAST SEASON. TRANSFER TO NEW COURSE. The past season of tho Manukau Ainatour Cycling Club lias been one of tho most strenuous in the history of the club, which was founded in 1924, and commenced catering for tho road sport early in the winter of 1925. In tho opening senior road race of tho season on April 26, tho saddest fatality in the history of the road racing sport occurred when one of the club's leading riders, L. C. Aldrod, lost his life. The transfer of activities from the level tar-sealed Mangere circuit to the hilly, and, in comparison,, rough and difficult course of fivo miles to th# lap at Mount Roskill, was a direct result of the accident. It was to tho Etronuous racing over the Mount Eoskill course that both C. A. Clarke and H. It. Dwight largely attributed thoir splendid performances in accounting for tho premier awards in the 102 milos Palmerston North to Wellington evont. Clarke rode otf 20in. to win tho event and gain second fastest time, whilo Dwight recorded fastest tiino, with which went the championship sash, and finished second to Clarke wlion riding from scratch. Theiso performances were the outstanding efforts recorded by members during tho season. On tho Mount Roskill, course R. G. Foubister performed with remarkablo success and during the season accounted for fastest timo honours on no fewor than ten occasions besides winning two events outright. Considering that an accident during tho track season prevented him from racing until late in tho year, and tho fact that ho only rode in 14 events, his season of winnings was really a phenomenal one. Tho fifth annual race for the Cotter Cup was decisively won by E. J. Avery, off 2m 30s, who also registered fastest time, a feat which has never previously been recorded in this race. The Ivolin Challenge Points Cup competition became excitingly close toward tho close of tho season. When the last race was held only three points separated tho first and fifth riders. By winning the event E. A. Cleaver brought his total number of points up to 20, which placed him two points ahead of D. Baird, who was second in the contest. Among the juniors H. V. Gordon proved himself the best road performer by recording fastest time on six occasions. He competed in ten of the 13 races held for the junior division members. In all except one caso he rode off scratch. A. W. Robinson, with four fastest times, a win and two thirds to his credit, commenced to ride brilliantly toward the close of the season, only having to admit defoat by Gordon. The mid-weekly races will shortly commence at the Western Springs Stadium track. The Papatoetoe Amateur Cycling Club will open its track season on December 6.
