BORING FOR OIL.
NEW PLYMOUTH OPERATIONS. TEST OF MOTUROA WELL. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH. Wednesday. Tho No. 1 well operated by Moturoa Oilfields, Limited, drilling at which has been suspended for a fortnight, was tested yesterday by an inspector of mines. It was found that tho water had been' effectively checked, thus allowing drilling to be resumed.
The test was interesting, in that a dipper when brought to tho surface showed distinct traces of oil, thicker than that obtained recently. There was a strong flow of inflammable gas. Tho depth is 2122 ft. Mr. C. N. Taylor, managing director of tho company, considered the flow of inflammable gas in such force a very hopeful sign.
Drilling was continued last night and this morning without any further signs of water. Tho depth reached was 2140 ft. An expert driller has been engaged by tho directors of the Blenheim Oil Company. Tho expert has just completed a contract with a company in Australia and ho was immediately engaged by the Blenheim Company, lie will arrivo in New Zealand in about ten days' time.
