ELLERSLIE NOTES.

VISITORS ON THE SCENE.

TRANSFER FROM AVONDALE.

CORINAX IN WORK AGAIN.!

It was an off morning at Ellerslie yeaterday, and only pace Vork was accomplished. Like (ho other local training centres Elleffllio has been quiet for a couple of days following fho Avondale Jockey Olub's Spring Meeting but in view o! the near upproaoh of tho' Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting an Immediate resumption of activity can be expected. Many of the visiting horses who were located at Avondale during the progress of the meeting thero have been transferred to Ellerslie and among tlioso now at 'headquartors are Seatown, Cylinder, Star Strangor, Vandyke, Mendip, Awaken, Silvermine, Taumai, Honiton and Volimond. Theso horses wore all out working steadily yesterday. The Southern trainers R. Alexander and T. R. George, who were hero for the Avondolo meeting, aro remaining for the Auckland meeting. Alexander's team comprises Commandant, Chrysology, Great Cbartor and Courtesy and George's Imateagirl. Johneen and Make Up. With the exception of Commandant these horses all raced at Avondale and look none tho worse for tho racing. After Seatown's heavy fall in tho Plumpton Handicap at Avondale on Monday it was feared that he might subsequently be sore, but he showed no signs of any illeffects when worked at Ellerslie yesterday All going well, in tho .meantimo, Seatown will take his place in ,the Mitohelson Cup. and he will only have to como through his final gallops satisfactorily to have ft following, especially if the going is soft. After-a Bpell extending over three months Corinax has been taken in hand again by J. Williamson and he made his reappearance on tho tracks yesterday. Corin&x is very burly after his holiday and, .as he is a gross customer who requires plenty of work to wind him up, it will be well on in the season before ho is in anything liko good racing trim.

Although ho failed to do ns well as expected when sent out favourite for the Grey Lynn Hurdles at Avondale on Monday, Tatftnai made quite a good showing to finish fourth, and it is likely that he will race in improved fashion when he makes his next appearance on the sooond day of the Auckland meeting. Taumai benefited by his race at Avondale and looked very bright when out working yesterday.

While J. H. Jefferd has temporarily returned to Hastings for the Hawke'o Bay meeting, the members of his Auckland team, Cylinder, Star Stranger and Vandyke, are under the oare of W. Hockley. Cylinder and Star Stranger look all the better for the racing they had at Avondale, where Cylinder had a hard race to win tho Avondale Guineas under conditions that were not to. his liking. - SOUTHERN DERBY HOPE. COUNT CAVOUR'S BROTHER. Gustavo, who won the Fairfield Handicap, one mile, at Ashburton last Saturday, is a full brother to Count Cavour, winner of both Derbies and the New Zealand Cup, and is one of the most, promising Derby horsee in the South Island this year. He is a bolter coloured chestnut than Count Cavour, and, if anything, 'is a more attractive mover on the track. He was not produced until last autumn, and at his third and last start as a two-year-old he had a very easy' end-to-end win in the Novico Stages at Amberley. He was not ready at the Grand National meeting but he ran two creditable races. On the first:,6o-; casion he waa rushed to the front and did not see T>fit oft the second he came from the back and only just failed to get into a place. The latter performance pleased hia trainer, T. H.-Gillet, who holds a high opinion of his possibilities and expects him to follow closer in tho footsteps 1 of His champion brother than The Viscount did. It is worth noting that Tho Viscount is A bay but Gustavo baa mado a return; to the chestnut that has brought most success to the family.

TROTS AT GERALDINE. AUCKLAND-OWNED HORSES, j , • Two light harness events figure on the Geraldine Racing Club's programme today. The Auckland owner. Mr. D. R. Revell. is represented in each event, Colorado being engaged in the Geraldine Trot, and Belle Lorimer in the Orari Trot. Colorado is a promising tbree-yoar-old, by Wrack, from Osier Beauty, and claims engagements in this year's Derbies. Last Saturday Colorado was given a run at Ashburton, shaping encouragingly, and ho is expected to run ■ prominently to-day. He will meet another classic candidate. Royal Chenault, who finished third to Arothusa and Gold Chips, iri the Sapling Stakes in June. Tho Peter Chonault colt went slightly amiss sorao time ago, and, consequently, his preparation was interrupted. The form of these three-year-olds will be ■watched with interest, but they will experience solid opposition from an older rival'in Great d'Oro. Belle Lorimer, who is half-sister to Dundas Boy, had her first race at Ashburton last Saturday and mado Buch a creditable showing as'to suggest that' R. Berry will not bo long in securing a stake with her. The mile and. a-auarter heat to-day should find her making a bold bid for victory. Among the starters in this event is another Derby candidate Rawhitiroa, by Rey do Oro—Bright Alice, and, therefore, half-brother to Kohara.' Ho is owned by Mr. R. M. Morten, a patron of J. Bryce'a stablo. In the same race is the oft-expected Real Girl, and tho useful Man-o-"War gelding. Stowaway, and they should make things interesting.

BREEDING OF SARGON. An interesting feature of the pedigree of the Randwick winner Sargon (brother, to Catkin) is the crossings to the famous more Mineral, whose eon Wenlock, by Lord Clifden. scored a surprise victory in the Doncastor St. Loger of 1872, nayß the Melbourne writer "Beacon." Wonlock's son Padlook mado his mark as a sire in Australia. Mineral herself was closoly inbred and in that respect was no different from many other famous matrons. Sho >jas got by Rataplan out of Manganese by Birdcatcher. ' Rataplan (brotlier to Stockwoll) was by Birdcatcher's son, The Baron, Hukapapa, dam of Sargon and Catkin, was got by Snow King, whose sire was the great stayer, Willonyx, by William the Third The third dam of Willonyx was GiHola by Musket out of Wonlock'a full sister, Siluria. Hukapapa'a third dam, Hungry, was by the Epsom Derby winner, tho Austrian-owned Kisber, the most celebrated of the offspring of Mineral. Hukapapa's dam Mario Odjlle was halfsister to Sparrow Hawk, dnm of that brilliant gelding Tho Hawk. ' RACING FIXTURES.
