BRIDGE SET ON FIRE.
SETTLERS SUPPRESS FLAMES.

The county engineer, Mr. F. A. Stevens, reported to tho Taurnnga County Council to-day (hat a determined attempt was made on Wednesday evening to burn (ho Kopouroa Bridge, on (he Taurange-Te Pulce main road. Several bags of kindling wood, saturated with kerosene, were used. Two settlers in the neighbourhood, Messrs. Ward and Phillips, observed (ho firo and wore promptly 011 the scene. They lifted water from the Kopouroa Stream and also used a pump, their promptitude saving (he bridge from destruction. Their clothes were ruined by the water. It was agreed by the council that a sum of money be voted the men who extinguished the flames. The council decided to offer a reward of £5 for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons who set. fire to tho bridge.
