FATHER TAKES A CHANCE.

LIFE-OR-DEATH OPERATION

Although lie had no Surgical experience, a father performed an operation at sea and saved the life of his nine-year-old son. Captain It. W. Crome took his boy on the Ellerman liner City of Alexandria on a voyage from New York to Brisbane for the sake of his health.

The child had previously been operated upon for empyema—presumably an incision ~to release fluid from the region of the lungs—and when the liner was many miles out at sea he was taken dangerously ill. The distracted father, noticing the marks left by the operation, says the News of the World, decided to take the only chance there was of saving the boy's life. No anaesthetics were available, but the operation wtts carried out successfully. When the ship reached Brisbane the boy walked ashore without assistance.
