PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.
INCENTIVE TO SCOUTS.
PRESENTATION OF TROPHY,
The committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelly to Animals met last evening, Mr. L. Rhodes presiding. Mr. W. J. Ifoldsworth. Metropolitan Scout Commissioner, and Mr. A. J. Peart, District Commissioner, attended the meeting for the purpose of receiving from the president, Mr. C. 11. Furness, the trophy presented by Miss Rendall for annual competition by the Boy Scout troops. The trophy, a handsome bronzo statuette, is to be the prize in an annual essay contest among scouts who are working for their animal welfare badge, and wiil bo held by the winning troop for one year, the writer of the winning essav receiving « silver medal and certificate'from tho society. The commissioner expressed himself as delighted with tho incentive thus given to scouts to study that branch of scout law, which deals with the understanding of animal life.
Mr. S. Childo was appointod bonorarv inspector for tho society at Raglan. Messrs. W. Goodfcllow, A. Puckey and Mrs. 11. Cotter were appointed life members of tho society. Preliminary arrangements in connocjtku with Animal Welfare Week, to be held from October 11 to October 18, were considered. Letters were received from tho Council of Christian Congregation:, other religious bodies, and Bishop Lisloti, agreeing to draw tho attention of clergy and preachers to tho desire of .the society that reference should bo made to animal welfare on Sunday, October 12. Tho report of the inspector gave details of many cases investigated during tho month. Two bullocks, one horse, two cows, six dogs and 20 cats were humanely destroyed. A notable feature of tho report was tho number of cases of horses, cows and calves in starving condition or very thin from insufficient feeding. In every case, additional food was ordered and provided by the owners.
